Past consultation update: make the case against the vaping ban

A historical campaign update about the earlier public-places consultation. It remains published for context, but it is not the current consultation action.

The government is consulting on whether indoor places where smoking is already banned should also become vape-free and heated tobacco free by law. Save Vaping exists to oppose that proposal clearly and quickly.

Historical note: this post relates to the earlier public-places consultation. The current Save Vaping action is the 2026 DHSC consultation on tobacco and vapes packaging, appearance, and display.

Our case is straightforward.

  • It is bad for health because it risks pushing some people back towards smoking and discouraging smokers from switching to reduced-risk alternatives.
  • It is bad for business because venues and retailers would have to pay for and enforce a law with no clear economic benefit.
  • It is not supported by credible evidence that secondhand vapour is harming bystanders or that heated tobacco should be treated like smoking in public-place law.
  • It is unfair and illiberal because it would take away freedom from adults and business owners without a proportionate justification.

If you have not responded yet, do two things now:

  1. Submit a response to the public consultation.
  2. Write to your MP and explain why this proposal is bad for health, bad for business, and bad for freedom.

That combination matters. Consultation responses create a formal record. MP pressure makes the issue politically harder to ignore.
