This update is based on a New Nicotine Alliance article created on 24 February 2026.
The government has recently opened a public consultation regarding a proposed ban on vaping and heated tobacco use in public places. The New Nicotine Alliance believes that this is a mistake and an unnecessary legislative overreach for which there is no justification.
As a charity, the NNA believes it is vital that the voices of those who understand the benefits of harm reduction are heard during this process. Your personal experiences and insights are the most powerful tools we have to ensure that future policies are based on evidence and common sense.

We are sharing the following briefing to help inform your perspective, but the most important thing is that you participate. Please take a few moments to complete the official consultation and share your views. When you fill out the form, you might find it helpful to focus on how switching to these products has helped you or others stay away from combustible tobacco. Do not be put off by questions which ask for new evidence, your lived experience is evidence in its own right, so please feel free to tell your stories.
You can also mention that current scientific evidence does not justify treating vaping and heated tobacco like smoking in public-place law, as explained in the briefing.
Your contribution does not need to be long or overly technical to be effective. It simply needs to be an honest reflection of why a public ban would be counterproductive to health goals. By speaking up now, we can help protect the progress the UK has made in reducing smoking rates.
You can access the government consultation and supporting materials from the consultation page above. To have your say, click on Respond online at the foot of the page. Responses must be submitted by 11:59pm on Friday 8 May 2026.
